elvis costello and the attractions - armed forces

Declan McManus [AKA Elvis Costello] is a very intelligent lyricist and performer and has moved a long way from these fabulous new wave roots. I always seen the song ‘’Olivers Army’’ as a dig at the British Army Presence in Ireland and Oliver Cromwell [don’t know if this is true] and the lyric ‘’But it's no laughing party when you've been on the murder mile’’ as the mile of the Antrim Road between the Old Cavehill Road and Carlisle Circus in Belfast [Scene of approximately 1,800 murders during the troubles]. I went to school there for a year and concur ‘’it's no laughing party’’.
