terry jacks - seasons in the sun [192]

A lot of rumours surrounded the title song of this album in 1973 revolving mostly around the impending death of the singer obviously from some lingering illness and the song being his goodbye. Canny man released this massive selling single [10,000,000 and counting] on his own label and i hope pocketed the royalties. Terry Jacks is 67!

ritchie family - african queens

In an attempt to stay alive as teenagers in war torn Northern Ireland in 1977 rather than go into Belfast we would reduce the risk by driving 60 to 90 miles away from the city [no licence or insurance required] for a night out. On those long drives with the radio on i remember the Ritchie family [none of whom are related] playing mostly "The Best Disco In Town". They where good times despite what you may think!

fureys and davey arthur - alcoholidays

Seen these fine Chaps several times in the 80's when they where riding the crest of a wave and they where great Craic. But i must say i find the album title quite sad as it panders to one of the Worlds perceptions of the Irish as a race of piss heads and in no way reflects the beautiful songs contained which have nothing to do with alcohol [except track 11]. "Steal Away" is an all time favourite and "Green Fields of France" superb and the rest are the Dog's as well!

1 Silver threads among the gold
 2 Steal Away
3 When You Were Sweet Sixteen

Some Men Fight For Silver

Thank God Poppy Day is over and to bastardise the words of Kieran "Header" Nugent the only way I'd have been wearing one is if they had managed to nail it to my chest. Their heroic campaign against Afghan Hill Farmers is shameful even by British standards. Also i hear one of their Allies possibly Corporal G. Dahmer has been saving the body parts [Trophies] of murdered civilians!
