x - los angeles

One of the most respected punk rock bands to come out of the USA "X" failed to translate this into record sales. Like a lot of good things in life the less people know about it the better and that goes for this excellent slab of punk rock. Also must say its a fine record cover as well.

2. "Johny Hit and Run Paulene"
3. "Soul Kitchen"

mary hopkin - those were the days

1972 release from one of the first artists that the Beatles put on their new Apple label. Hopkins primarily a Welsh Folk Singer did sing several Beatles covers during her career. Back in the day when Ireland and the UK could still win the Eurovision Song Contest Marys "Knock, Knock Who's There?" was pipped at the post by Irelands "All Kinds of Everything" sung by 17 year old Dana from Derry. I celebrate any victory by Ireland over England even at this level

frijid pink - defrosted

Frijid Pink never really attracted much success during their career despite sharing top billing with the likes of MC5 and the Stooges in the late 60's. There high point commercially was a cover of "House Of The Rising Sun" which is excellent but is not from this 1970 release.

big black - atomizer

Big Blacks finest hour and without a shadow of a doubt the song [sic] "Kerosene" is their greatest achievement its fucking bliss mate. Other songs on Atomizer involve sociopaths committing evil acts that most people only sometimes contemplate: "Big Money" a corrupt police officer, "Bazooka Joe" a shell-shocked veteran who becomes a contract killer, "Stinking Drunk" a violent alcoholic, "Fists of Love" a sadist. and” Jordan, Minnesota", an event that saw a large number of the town's adults indicted on charges of involvement in a huge child sex ring. So top marks from me.

1."Jordan, Minnesota"
2."Passing Complexion"
3."Big Money"

ray davies - other people's lives

Solo release from head "Kink" Ray Davies still got the pulling power to have a top 40 album in 2006. Full of great lyrics on tracks like "Things Are Gonna Change (The Morning After)"  and "Is There Life After Breakfast?" Once seen a documentary about how Ray moved from his Terraced House in Muswell Hill into a Mansion as the Kinks Royalty's began to pour in. Two weeks later he left the Mansion and returned to the Terraced House in Muswell Hill and gave the reason I'm just a working class local boy [or something like that].

amy winehouse - i told you i was trouble

Another very sad loss dead at 27 a troubled soul with a fantastic voice. In 2006 she won 5 Grammys including Best New Artist, Record of the Year and Song of the Year for once true talent was honoured. Addiction kills and i don't mean the Drink and Drugs i mean the inability to live in this world clean. Some one wrote about Amy in 2008 "Crashing headfirst into success and despair, with a codependent husband in jail, exhibitionist parents with questionable judgement, and the paparazzi documenting her emotional and physical distress". I hope she has found some peace.

Everything they did as a band and solo is beautiful beautiful stuff. Give it a listen cause "You'll Never Beat The Irish!"

steve harley and cockney rebel - psychomodo

One of the classic albums of Glam Rock released in 1974 and a hugh seller in the UK and nada in the USA. Bowie, Bolan and Harley added a touch of class to the Glam scene and for a glimpse of what it was all about find a copy of Steve Harley singing "Make Me Smile (Come Up and See Me)" on "Top of the Pops" its still very very cool!.

pulp - his 'n' hers

Jarvis Cocker at the height of his songwriting this album contains some great lyrics and music. Jarvis earned my utmost respect when he got on stage at the brit awards and bared his arse to the crowd whilst Michael Jackson was performing his earth song or some such nonsense. Top tracks  "Joyriders", "Babies" and let not forget "Do You Remember the First Time?" fucking right i do but it was nothing to write home about.

angelic upstarts - anthems against scum

The Upstarts provide Insurance and Emergency Relief required to combat right wing scum. Words can't begin to express the shear horror of events in Norway yesterday. Norway is one of the finest examples of how a country should be run and this must have grated against the dark soul of some Fascist Fuckup. I'm no pacifist and believe in direct action against those who would oppress but this wanker kills a load of kids and then the cowardly c**t gives himself up. Fuck him, fuck him, fuck all of them.

Variety is the spice of life and musically i like everything with a bit of heart. Just take a bit of time out to listen to this fantastic voice. johnny marr and the healers boomslang

Like a lot of highly talented UK artists Johnny Marr is the son of Irish Immigrants, see also band mate Morrissey, 3 of the Beatles, Johnny Rotten, Liam and Noel Gallagher, Elvis Costello even Boy George to name very few. Anyway i rest my case. Many years after the Smiths sadly ceased to be Johnny Marr brought out this album in 2003, like all his work its quality.

barry white - can't get enough

Can't get enough of Barry White. Second solo release from the Walrus of Love and by far his biggest seller. With tracks like  "You're the First, the Last, My Everything" and "Can't Get Enough of Your Love, Babe" how could it possibly go wrong. Barrys shear size was in the end his undoing and contributed greatly in causing his untimely death in 2003.

eagles - one of these nights

Conceived as a Country Super Group they certainly delivered a very polished and accomplished end product. This is my favourite Eagles album released in 1975 a year before their even more massive "Hotel California" album. I have really happy memories of 1975 and this is a big part of them.

1."One of These Nights" (Don Henley, Glenn Frey) – 4:51
2."Too Many Hands" (Randy Meisner, Don Felder) – 4:43
3."Hollywood Waltz" (Bernie Leadon, Tom Leadon, Henley, Frey) – 4:04

big country - crossing

Debut album from 1983 and a fine addition to the celtic rock genre. Quality is the best way to describe this album. For the record front man Stuart Adamson [formerly of the skids] sadly was found dead in 2001 in a hotel room and this album is a great reminder of what we lost with his tragic death.

I may very well have the world upside down but i have been trying hard to pass this fantastic album on to my children. Amen have been voted Overall Best Band in the World and Best Live Band in the World by the knowledgeable readers of Metal Hammer. "The Price Of Reality" and "Too Hard to Be Free" are really great rousing hardcore anthems. It may well be "Too Hard to Be Free" but lets continue the struggle just in case its possible!

After thankfully changing their name from the Gaylords  to the Marmalade they had a successful career in the late 60's and early 70's. Two million selling singles by the band were the beatles moment of writers block "Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da" and their own excellent "Reflections Of My Life".
